The Wandering Circus
Have you ever wanted to run away and join the circus…?
This summer you may get your chance! Roll up, roll up, the Wandering Circus is coming to a town near you!
Featuring international acts along with homegrown talent, New Zealand’s newest ‘flow arts’ circus is hitting the road this summer and we want everyone to join us! With shows and workshops all over the South Island, there are lots of opportunities to watch, learn, and be amazed at the stellar line-up of artists with their amazing skills in object manipulation, circus and cabaret acts, and fire performance.
Organised by the Community Arts and Circus Trust New Zealand (CACTNZ), the charity and tour’s mission is to promote the positive effects that circus and other arts can provide to both individuals and the community. For those wanting to have a go, hoops, poi, staff and juggling are all on the menu, along with many more workshops in object manipulation. Flow arts are a modern tangent of traditional circus, using props and body movement to tap into the ‘flow state’. Which is alike to meditation, and associated with mental health benefits.
“Flow and circus arts are an excellent tool for developing physical coordination, building cognitive skills, de-stressing and mindfulness” Tania Whetū (Tour Producer) explains. “Combine the excitement of picking up new tricks, a bit of laughter at the antics of the instructors, and by the end of the day, everybody will walk away happy and more knowledgeable, no matter their age or fitness level.”
“Shows and festivals are also a great way to bring people together and build community.” Tour Director, Xanthe Naylor, says this is all in keeping with CACTNZ's mission. ‘We are striving to share this with people across New Zealand by finding places to host workshops and shows open to everyone for an affordable price, while also providing the performers with a platform to showcase and develop their art.’
"There will be something for everyone", shares Wanaka coordinator and CACTNZ founder Claire French, "performances feature modern circus acts, flow arts, and much much more. We're super excited to be presenting this to the community".
Dunedin is in for a treat with a whole range of different events lined up either side of music and circus workshop festival, Circulation, 8-12th November at Whare Flat. On the 27th of October there will be a ‘fun-filled, all-ages taster workshop day’ at the Malcam Trust, who will also generously be hosting a family friendly Circulation Showcase on the 16th November. For adults, there is a Circus Cabaret at the New Athenaeum Theatre on the 15th, and Cirquelesque (R18) at Stilettos Revue Bar on the 18th!
Then it’s off to Wanaka for two shows (Kids Matinee followed Adults Cabaret) by at the Lake Wanaka Centre on the 21st November and workshops on the 22nd at Mount Aspiring College.
Christchurch has its turn at the end of November, with a Cabaret show on the 30th at Halo Venue, and workshops at the Christchurch Circus Centre on the 1st December.
Granity, on the West Coast, gets its turn 3-5th, after the Granity Fire Performance Club applied for special funding for us to join them for a workshop intensive followed by a show!
Then its of to Nelson and Picton (show dates to be announced soon). The tour will finish at Under the Spinfluence Festival 14th-17th December in Wellington.
You can find more information on the Wandering Circus website, or follow ‘CACTNZ’ on Facebook to stay up to date with the latest event announcements. This tour would not be possible without the assistance of many sponsors, communities and Councils across the South Island, and their contributions are acknowledged and appreciated.
