The fire within; a fairy tale remix
Koha based, locally involved, family friendly shows!!!

Community Arts and Circus Trust New Zealand (CACTNZ) proudly presented a firey theatrical tale. We invited the audience on a magical journey towards a young mans self acceptance. In collaboration with local young people and organisations, international fire artists and musicians. The outdoor show was koha (donation) based which went back to the youth organisations involved. With spectacle, music, drama, mindbending prop manipulation, awe inspiring talent and LOADS OF FIRE!
Whats it all about?
The Community Arts and Circus Trust New Zealand (CACTNZ) produced an exciting show for the Wellington Fringe 2014. Performed in Lower Hutt at the Dowse Square and Wellington in Frank Kitts Park with a totally different feel and different local groups and young people.
It featured international fire artists - the theatrical fire show followed the narrative of one young mans journey to self acceptance, as well as exploring important issues such as bullying and being proud of who you are the show involved live music, costumes, spectacle, and local youth groups and organisations.
The young people were involved in the rehearsal and show creation process which even involved them making their own fire equipment (and learning to use it in a safe and controlled way) this was a great opportunity for the young people to learn new skills, be involved in a professional production and to work alongside international fire artists.
We had professional performers from the New Zealand, the UK and Australia and the show involved dragonstaffs, fire hula hoops, contact balls, fire fans and MORE!
CACTNZ director Claire French says ‘We wanted to create something unique – too many fire shows are boring with people just spinning fire equipment and not interacting with the audience. Our idea will take the audience on a journey, it will be a performance all ages and backgrounds can relate to. Involving young people, particularly those at risk, is a big part of our project. We want to give the young people the opportunity to experience something totally different, and to do this in a safe and supportive environment. CACTNZ is all about that, this project hits the aims we are trying to achieve as a trust. To be able to support the people who need it the most and to bring community arts into the hearts of communities is what we love to do.’
A big THANK YOU to Creative Communities Lower Hutt for their funding support!
